Welcome to Better Journeys

Better Journeys supports older people to do more of the things they love by increasing confidence using local transport across Sheffield. Want to go shopping or to try out a lunch club? Have friends who live on the other side of the city? Maybe you want to explore something new but don’t know where to start? If you are over 50 and live in the Firth Park ward, we can help!

What We Do

Are you finding it hard to get to where you want to be?

We can find the right bus for you, give you a paper copy of the timetable, and advise on which ticket to buy.

Do you struggle to find the right bus?

We can teach you the best way to find the bus you need or plan a new journey using your computer, tablet or smart phone.

Do you need a little extra help from the bus driver?

A Journey Assist Card helps bus drivers understand you need them to be a bit more patient. You can print it out  or contact us and we’ll get one to you.

Are you unsure about making the journey on your own?

If you’re not sure where to start, not been on a bus for ages, or ill health has knocked your confidence we can start from the beginning with you.  One of our patient and understanding travel trainers will work with you to help grow your confidence and make a journey of your choice easier.

Would you like to volunteer with us?

Are you confident when walking about and passionate about helping to reduce people’s feelings of isolation and loneliness? If so, we would love you to volunteer with us and become a Walking Buddy. Get in touch to find out more!

How do you get about?

Walk

Why not try out one of Sheffield’s fun and friendly walks all over the city for a wide range of abilities, or take part in the Better Journeys Walking Buddy scheme?

Cycle

It’s never too late to get back on your push bike or learn to ride  for the first time! Check out the Sheffield Cycle Map  to discover great local places to explore.

Train

When’s the last time you got on a train? You can get 1/3 off the price of normal train fares with your Senior Rail Card

Bus & Tram

To plan a journey you can use timetables, have a look at bus maps, or use the online journey planner. Ensure you’ve got a Senior or Disabled Person’s  concessionary pass if you’re entitled to it to make your journeys free.

If buses near you aren’t convenient, why not try the Shopper Bus to take you to your local supermarket or a City Ride  to take you door to door?

See attachment: Here’s the timetable of which supermarket your local shopper bus takes you to.

Did you know that if you are a jobseeker you may be entitled to half price bus fares on Stagecoach’s BackOnBoard scheme

Volunteer with Better Journeys!

Become a Walking Buddy
Are you confident when walking around and passionate about helping to reduce people’s feeling of isolation? If so, we would love you to become a Walking Buddy. You would be supporting someone who lives near you who is a little nervous of walking around on their own. You would go for a walk with them, have a chat, and help them get around. This could make all the difference to one of your neighbours!

Time commitment: Flexible, no long term commitment
Location: Firth Park, Longley, or Southey Green

Become a Map Maker
We are making a map of the Firth Park Ward to help older people plan journeys. The map will show benches and resting places, bus stops and whether they have seats and are covered, and public toilet facilities. Who better to help create this map, than people who live in the area! The role will involve walking around the area and marking what you find on a map provided by us. Everybody’s work will be put together until we’ve covered all the roads in the ward! You can choose to do as much or as little walking as you like, going as fast or slowly as you like, and you can choose what days to do it, depending on the weather!
Time commitment: Flexible, whatever you can spare
Location: The Firth Park ward: Firth Park, Longley, Southey Green
